Is Pilates the fountain of youth??

I know I know, bold title....

But let's let's talk about the magical elixir that helps us defy the laws of ageing: Reformer Pilates.

Ageing is inevitable, and beautiful in a way. Better than the alternative right? And as I have proudly found my first grey hair recently, my thoughts have turned to ageing. The good, the bad, the ugly - which bits we can embrace and cherish (laughter lines, wisdom, stories) and some bits which we can show some healthy resistance to (immobility, loss of balance, the onset of ill health.)

Now, of course I am going to say Pilates is a magic cure-all wonder solution - I'm a Pilates teacher ;) But actually there is truth to it in a simple way: keeping your body moving, and crucially: challenging yourself physically and mentally is enormously beneficial to staving off some of the effects of ageing. So there.

Join me as we explore how this fantastic exercise regime can help limit the effects of aging and keep you feeling young and vibrant, well younger and slightly more vibranter anyway!

Reformer Pilates: An Introduction.

First things first, let's get acquainted with the powerhouse that is Reformer Pilates; a low-impact exercise method that focuses on core strength, mobility, and balance. Using combination of the sliding carriage, ropes, the foot-bar, and crucially: the springs of various resistance, enables a full-body low stress (for the body and mind!) workout. Highly, highly effective.

Here are some key benefits from that we can gain from working out with the Pilates reformer which have a

direct reverse effect on typical ageing:

Boosting Flexibility and Joint Mobility: One of the most significant effects of aging is the gradual loss of flexibility and mobility. As we grow older, our joints tend to stiffen up, making simple tasks like bending, reaching, and twisting more challenging. Reformer Pilates comes to the rescue by targeting those tight muscles and stiff joints, allowing us to regain and even enhance our flexibility. The controlled and precise movements performed on the Reformer machine help lengthen and stretch the muscles, improving joint range of motion. With regular practice, you'll find yourself moving more freely and with greater ease, feeling like a well-oiled machine. We always have a stretchy moment in class, be it a juicy hip flexor lunge, or an un-elegant but effective splits with feet in straps!

Strengthening the Core and Posture Aging often leads to a weakening of our core muscles, resulting in poor posture and an increased risk of injuries. Reformer Pilates focuses heavily on stre

ngthening the core, including the abdominal, back, and pelvic muscles. The resistance provided by the springs on the Reformer machine challenges these muscles, helping to develop a strong and stable core. As your core strength improves, generally speaking, so does your posture. With proper alignment and support from a strengthened core, you'll stand taller and straighter, reducing strain on your spine and preventing the aches and pains commonly associated with aging.

Improving Balance and Stability. I learned recently that your balance starts to decrease after age 30....30! Thought I've4 not seen any evidence of that this week with those of you doing standing lunges up on the reformer beds - fantastic balance in the studio... Maintaining good balance becomes increasingly important as we age, as it helps prevent falls and injuries. Reformer Pilates places a strong emphasis on balance and stability, as many exercises require you to engage your core while performing movements on an unstable surface. The sliding carriage and adjustable springs create an ever-changing environment that challenges your balance and coordination. Over time, you'll notice a significant improvement in your ability to stay steady on your feet, giving you the confidence to navigate the world with ease.

Mental Wellbeing and Stress Relief. I've heard a few people mention how mindful they're finding classes. I usually quip that it's because you're concentrating so hard on the 400 different things I'm barking at you...which is true, and to be fair: not to be underestimated. Let's not understate the impact of Reformer Pilates on our mental wellbeing. Aging can often bring with it a range of stresses and anxieties. Engaging in regular exercise, like Reformer Pilates, can release endorphins, our brain's natural feel-good chemicals. The focused and controlled nature of this workout can also help calm the mind, providing a meditative-like experience that reduces stress and anxiety. So, not only will you feel better physically, but your mental state will also reap the benefits of this fantastic exercise regime. Plus, there is a definite point to be made about coming together as a group of people to share an experience and a laugh at the same time too.

Bone density & muscular strength: Weight bearing exercise and muscle-building exercise has HUGE benefits on bone density and metabolism, both of which deteriorate with age. If you've been to a Kore Pilates class, I'm sure you'll agree... there's some muscle building, limb-shaking strength being built here!

Conclusion Reformer Pilates truly is a fountain of youth. By improving flexibility, strengthening the core, enhancing b

alance, and boosting mental wellbeing.

So if you're finding grey hairs like me, get yourself to a reformer class and we'll do some movement and swap wise old lady tales together ;)

Much love
