jnl: 14th Jan - gongs, ice cream and poker

Well fancy seeing you here again....and POOF! another week flies by...

Here's what I've been up to this week in the world Pilates, wellbeing, parenting, working etc this week:

Weekend 7/8th

Lyra was with her Dad visiting friends in Devon, so Danny and I had a clear-diary weekend to ourselves which felt like a nice 'catch your breath' moment to further adjust from the weird Christmas-back-to-reality thing.

Feeling SO frickin' grateful to both be feeling healthy (as in not full of cold and flu) enough to do some proper movement we headed out for a rainy run on Saturday morning - I absolutely love running in the rain, partly it's refreshing when you're getting hot and sweaty, and partly (mostly) because it feels more dramatic! Team it with a moody playlist and you can get through with main-character-in-a-movie energy (or is that just the drama Queen in me??)

Danny wanted to avoid busy roads which took us on a really enjoyable 6.5k-er around the back of Sherborne. I was so happy that since my return to daily(ish) Pilates after the break my often-niggly-knee was trouble-free. Yay gold star to Pilates!

After quick (normal, non dramatic) showers, we headed to Teals where we had lunch and literally sat alllll afternoon drinking coffee, people watching (they have a great mezzanine for spying on shoppers) and doing the final bits of our January life planning and goal setting process which we have done in dribs and drabs over the break.

That evening we went to see friends (and Kore Pilates class participants!) who did some gorgeous vegan food, amazing cocktails and the three of them taught me how to play Poker - life skill I felt it was about time I had now I'm in my 30s.

Sunday was a very slow, lazy day until about 4pm when it got eevvveeennn slower - we attended our first gong bath sound healing experience with inholistics at the nine springs centre in Yeovil. I've been taking up more interest in mindful practices, largely due to Danny's current training in coaching and hypnotherapy and his passion for all things mind and meditation, so I was looking forward to seeing what this experience would be like.

Firstly - I noticed a very fidgety energy being in a lovely movement studio....but not doing any movement, I don't think I've ever done that before. You mean I just lie here?? Anyway, once I was over that, I settled into a comfy position with my cushion and blank (cute) and let the sounds and vibrations wash over me. It was actually really really lovely! I should've researched more about what is actually going on, I imagine it's to do with the vibrations, resonance and frequencies rattling through our bodies and affecting our 'vibe' on a literal level. I was pretty sleepy thanks to the late night cocktail poker situation the night before so it wasn't long before I was in that trippy falling asleep state. I don't think I actually drifted off, but considering our practitioner Debbie was 'gonging' - is that the right term?- for an hour and 20 mins it seemed to go pretty quickly, so maybe I did! It was a perfect Sunday evening thing to do actually, and luckily all we had to do after that was drift home, heat up the moussaka we had already made on Friday and crash out - lush.

Monday 9th

The bad news: Danny is heading back to Hampshire after an uninterppurted 2-3 weeks together. The good news: I see my girl after school today having not been with her all weekend. I had a mixture of marketing work for my two clients, and plenty of Kore marketing / faffing (I LOVE doing this stuff!) to keep me busy for a day of working from home. Picked up Lyra just after 3pm and spent a cosy rainy afternoon in playing board-games, heaven!

Once she was in bed I accidentally got really into the notion of planning for some digital Pilates products, courses and various ideas that I would like to launch this year. My enthusiasm exceeded my bed-time and I accidentally ended up going to bed around 11:30 - which I know isn't that late for most people, but I know that I don't do so well unless I get a decent early night so I was cursing myself a little for that one. I really want (and need) to prioritise my sleep schedule this year.

Tuesday 10th

I had a lunch meeting with one of my marketing clients today which was a big chunk out of the day once you factor in the hour drive there and back, and a 3pm school pick up deadline. Still I really enjoyed listening to the Pilates Elephants podcast by Raphael Bender en route, and it was a good catch up. I'm honestly feeling a bit nervous about how I'll juggle marketing clients (currently my sole income) and teaching when I get the studio up and running in a few weeks...a problem to solve 'as and when' - I'm being really conscious about overwhelm and stress - and in this case, there's no point stressing about it until it lands on my doorstep as a more immediate issue, which it might not even do...

Wednesday 11th

I had the contract through the post for the studio hire today - exciting! I read through it again over a coffee and did a fresh admin-y things I needed to do. Still not over the line yet (these things drag on) but I'm hoping to have the keys in the next couple of weeks, do renovations and decoration throughout February and open the doors in March - I spend a LOT of my time day dreaming about that at the moment...

It was class time again this evening - inspired by my runners knee thing, I designed a class all about lower body stability and gait for waking and running - thin lots of ankle, knee and hip balance coordination and stabilisation. Was so nice to welcome another new face to the Kore club tonight too (yay)

Thursday 12th

A lovely morning class with my regular Pilates pal Caz and another new face (yay!!) honestly my day peaked around there, such a nice way to start the day doing a movement class and enjoying one great conversation about Pilates with my class. After that it was quiet day working from home, actually a REALLY quiet day - I really noticed a slump in energy and vibe as I rattled around the house on my own without my little girl and partner. I used to revel in alone time and feel better when I was on my own, and it's really shifted, I notice the difference in my mood after not being with loved ones mid-week.

Roll on ice cream Fridays tomorrow!

Not one, not two but THREE regulars off class poorly tonight (get well soon everyone!) so we decided to just call it and resume next week. With that in mind I thought I'd put my 'gait class' from this week to the test with a run - I took a 5-6k around sherborne, stupidly in the dark with no lights so bit dodge in places but the KNEE was grand!

Treated myself to a hot bath and watched the new glass onion film, which was distinctly 'ok'

Friday 13th

Apparently a day to celebrate the divine feminine energy and cyclical nature of....well nature. cool!

I'm excited because Friday means I see Lyra gain after school, Danny comes over for the weekend AND it's my fave: ice cream Fridays! A tradition I started sometime last year with Lyra, simply: we get an ice cream after school on a Friday, it's such a treat and we spend all week fantasising about what flavour (or combo of flavours) to get, it's always a nice walk and chat in and back from town too. And having pudding before tea feels deliciously cheeky, a great start to the weekend. There's been so many times I've sat in the ice cream parlour (pistachio IC in hand) and breathed a huge sign of relief - 'we made it through this week.' It's become a real marker of the end of the week and start of the weekend, highly recommend these little regular rituals.

This Week:

Grateful for: My cosy warm home in this stormy weather

Highlight moment: Sipping an old fashioned and playing poker by a fire with three of my fave people

I learnt: 4/5 of adults will experience back pain in their lives. jeesh

I struggled with: Focusing on client work as opposed to all the exciting KORE business development

Word of the week: pace

Recommendation of the week: This episode of the Huberman Lab about consciousness, psychedelics and meditation (I'm only half way through so far)

Signing off ✌🏻
